Outside the Wormy Dog Saloon in Oklahoma City. Or OKC as they seem to refer to it here. For some reason that makes me think Ol’ Kansas City though, so I’m gonna stick to the full name thank you very much. This Wormy Dog Saloon methinks is gonna be a place we’re gonna like. It’s just has a vibe. We’ll see after the show tonight I guess.
Started our Avett Brothers relationship in Chicago at the House Of Blues on Wednesday night. First off, I’m nearly certain that heaven will be a bit like a gig at a House Of Blues. Thanks to everyone there for letting us feel like real musicians for a night. Can’t wait to see y’all again. Great crowd, especially for a Wednesday. I was thrilled with the turnout of folks singing along with our set. Lots of familiar faces and some new ones too. The Avetts were great. Sweet guys, fellow southern boys, so we’ll all get on just fine. Celebrated Siggi’s sisters birthday after the show. I think she might’ve gotten drunk. Maybe.
Headed for Columbia, MO the next night. First time playing at the Blue Fugue. This was a blast!! The guys/gals there were superb. Played with two good local bands. Ate great pizza. Tried in vain at the same bullshit juice bar to get a wheatgrass shot, yet again, they’re out. Luckily I was able to restrain Adam1 from choking the dingbat hippy chick behind the counter. haha. That room is one where we finally felt like we found a place that we can build an audience in Columbia. Hopefully we’ll be back soon.
Then made the drive over to Kansas City for the show last night. 80% chance of apocolypse inducing hail storms, but no worries, it’s an outdoor show. Luckily/surprisingly the weather held off and was quite nice. Now we’ve only played KC one time and that was like 6 years ago. None of the current band members were in the band. Hell I hadn’t even started puberty it was that long ago. But somehow the Avetts needed to be done early to get some rest to drive and do a radio show in Colorado. We were asked to play last so that they could get to the hotel and do their thing. Ok, but this could be weird. It’s a HUGE outdoor venue and NOONE(actually 9 people in KC) knows who the hell we are. First up is a local band who sounds lots more like Nashville than we do. Then up come the Avetts, who have a real nice following there. They play, and kill it, then leave. The crowd keeps chanting, “AVETTS AVETTS AVETTS!!!” They leave and then we come on. We were like the least popular band in the world. It was like we had made their band quit early. Shit we were just doing our job. I didn’t WANT to play last, cut them short. Hell we were dying to play in the middle and get to rock lots of new KC faces, but alas that wasn’t meant to be. We rocked anyway for a lovely albeit small group of folks who wanted to hear a little rock and roll. Then we went to Waffle House to drown our sorrows in grease, lard and eggs(plus a side of syrup).
So that’s it for now. Let’s see how Oklahoma City turns out tonight……
